πŸ“Hikes at Blueberry Mountain, Cape Breton Highlands National Park, Trail Guide

Distance: Approximately 7.0 km round trip (out-and-back).

Elevation Gain: Approximately 450 metres of elevation gain through a steady forest climb to the summit viewpoints.

Difficulty: Moderate. Blueberry Mountain features a gradual but consistent ascent. The trail is manageable for most reasonably active hikers but does require moderate fitness due to the continuous elevation gain.

Best Season: Late Spring through Early Fall (May to October). Summer offers lush greenery and comfortable hiking conditions, while early fall provides cooler temperatures and beautiful autumn colours. I completed the hike in late September and found conditions ideal.

Trail Conditions:

  • Unofficial, unmarked trail within Cape Breton Highlands National Park.

  • Shaded forest trail for most of the hike.

  • Small stream crossing near the beginning.

  • Narrow footpath with some overgrown sections near the summit.

  • Mixed terrain including dirt, roots, and rocky areas.

  • Exposed and windy viewpoints at higher elevations.

What to Bring:

  • Sturdy hiking boots or trail shoes

  • Long pants and long-sleeved shirt to protect against brush

  • Water and snacks

  • Windproof jacket or extra layer for the summit

  • Trail map or AllTrails app

  • Sunscreen and sunglasses

  • Insect repellent

  • Camera for the incredible coastal views

Safety Tips:

  • Research the route beforehand using AllTrails, as the trailhead can be difficult to locate.

  • Download offline maps because cell service may be limited.

  • Watch your footing on rocky and uneven sections.

  • Be prepared for stronger winds near the summit.

  • Stay aware of ticks, particularly during warmer months, and perform a tick check after your hike.

  • Rare bear and moose sightings have been observed but not common.

  • Tell someone your hiking plans if hiking alone.

  • Carry plenty of water, especially during summer.
